it wasn't no trash humpers

So i saw harmony korine's latest flick Spring Breakers last friday and i really wanted to like it. First off as soon as i saw harmony was making a movie with selena gomez on wikipedia a year and some change ago i was completely shocked as me and my best friend immediately tried throwing out reasons for him to make a movie with disney girls. The most obvious was yes it's for the irony, it's for the hype. The fact that these girls who made their name through wholesome pre-teen programs were going to be acting like wild teen spring breakers doing some weird gritty shit (at this time there was no description just assumed korine staples) was going to throw the media threw a loop. As months passed and more and more confirmed actors and pictures and SKRILLEX was announced as doing the score i was tired of trying to make sense of it all and decided to not think too much about it until it finally came out.

Now i would honestly be curious to know if harmony himself even liked this film. Because to me it seemed the most of it was a jab at our current generation what with the DUBSTEP (oh god even when it wasn't dubstep it still wasn't good), super cheesy spring break and college party scenes, and even this weird bad instagram like effect that had me just gaping. The beginning was actually pretty unbearable and it wasn't really until they got to their spring break destination that a couple of solid scenes came. I read that harmony wrote this with the visual of young chicks in bikinis and ski masks wielding guns on spring break and really that was the only good part. The imagery was strong, james franco and vanessa hudgens were on point, the exploitation ending was great and like i said some scenes (you're going to be hearing about the james franco britney spears piano ballad for a while but i personally enjoyed when the girls demonstrated to selena gomez's character how they robbed the chicken shack) were really good  but what ruined it for me was the editing. I guess he edited this film with what is called "liquid narrative" but it was just so over killed. There were particular scenes that got replayed constantly throughout the whole thing along with these dialogue/monologue narrations, seriously if i never hear james franco say "spraang braaak" in his retarded accent again it would be too soon, all along with a gun cocking sound effect that played every four minutes. I assume it was editing like that again as a comment on how obnoxious our generation is but still it almost ruined a good movie. I still want to see it again some time but i doubt this will ever be one of my favorites.
